Find the format that suits your style and dive into the action. NTRP - NATIONAL TENNIS RATING PROGRAM NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) tournaments offer players the ability to play tournaments at their appropriate NTRP rating level. NTRP tournaments offer divisions grouped by level (2.5-5.5) and age (18+, 40+, and 55+) and are offered in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. These tournaments may take place over 1 to 5 days but most commonly are held Friday through Sunday. One-day (Level 7) events are a convenient way for league or recreational players to experience the excitement without the weekend commitment. Join in, meet new players, and enjoy the game in a shorter, action-packed format. Tournaments with an NTRP Gold Cup Series designation are a level 4 tournament. Players who compete in tournaments with a Tournament of the Year designation will earn Level 5 ranking points. NTRP tournaments also allow players to work towards advancing to the NTRP National Championships. Players can qualify for the NTRP National Championships via the Grand Prix - the NorCal Season Finale, the NorCal Qualifier , or the National Standings List. For more details about how to qualify for the NTRP National Championships, click here . For more information about the NTRP National Championships, click here. IMPORTANT: Any player participating in a USTA NorCal-sanctioned NTRP tournament must have an NTRP rating. Violating this requirement or playing below the assigned NorCal self-rating level will result in an automatic 30-day suspension. Furthermore, any points earned in that tournament toward the National Standings List and the seeding/tentative/final rankings lists will be promptly removed. Stay informed, play fair, and let's keep the game respectful and enjoyable for all. AGE GROUP These tournaments are open to all levels and categorized in five-year increments, spanning from 30 to 100. To be eligible for an age division event, players need to hit the minimum age by December 31 of the scheduled starting year for that division. Age Group division players often travel around the country to compete in different tournaments and on different court surfaces, aiming at the coveted Gold Ball won at a National Championship. LEARN MORE League Captain Registration & Resources Thank you for being a League Captain. Your leadership is greatly appreciated and USTA NorCal has created resources and tips to help you on your journey. Before the season begins, use this guide to help you walk through all of the steps you need to take. When you’re ready to set up your team, ensure you have a full roster of committed players. Follow these guidelines below for a seamless process: REGISTER A TEAM 1 REGISTER YOUR TEAM Select the league and register your team. Enter your name as captain and choose a co-captain (optional). Captains need to have a current USTA membership. You can edit this information anytime during the season. 2 ENTER HOME COURTS If your team is under a Community Tennis Association (CTA), enter the CTA name first (e.g., Bay City). Leave section blank if you're not associated with a CTA. Designate the specific court location; your team name will include both the CTA and home facility. Teams must have reserved home courts for the season, with permission from the facility. If your CTA or facility isn't in our database, email us with the organization details for database inclusion. 3 TEAM REGISTRATION & PLAYERS JOINING The fee is $33 per player, non-refundable. Captains play for free but need to roster before participating in matches. 4 MULTIPLE TEAMS Players can join multiple teams of the same level, but they must be in different NorCal Areas. Only one team can be played for playoffs and beyond. Register a team now. Don't miss the action. Check the calendar and sign your team up! GET STARTED Additional Information on the Team Registration process SELF-RATED PLAYERS Players without a computer rating self-rate on the USTA national site. Ratings take 2-3 days to transfer to NorCal site. Captains can call the NorCal League office for self-rating assistance. NTRP GRIEVANCE Captains are responsible for accurate player ratings. Grievances challenge both player and captain; upheld grievances lead to penalties. MOVE UP/SPLIT UP RULE Limits players from Section Championship teams forming new teams at the same or lower level in the next season. AT-LEVEL PLAYER REQUIREMENT RULE Teams must meet minimum player requirements at the team's NTRP level before the first match. Insufficient at-level players result in a loss for the team. AGE ELIGIBILITY Each league has a minimum age requirement. REMOVING PLAYERS Players can be removed if they haven't played a match; use the "Remove From Roster" option. In 2025 Leagues, non-playing players receive a $29.85 credit within two weeks of the season end, applicable for 12 months. Post Season Playoffs and Beyond USTA Northern California offers various leagues with men's and women's adult, mixed and combo categories leading to championships. At the end of each local league season, teams progress to postseason and championship play. Playoff Structure: USTA NorCal determines the structure for teams, and the winner is recognized as the Local Area Champion, advancing to Sectional Championships. LOCAL LEAGUE PLAYOFFS Local League Playoffs are the first level of postseason play. Playoffs determine the winning team(s) from each local area. Flights: Flights of five or fewer teams have playoffs with the top two teams; six or more teams have playoffs with the top four teams. In the first round, the top-seeded team faces the fourth-seeded team, and the second-seeded team plays against the third-seeded team. The winners then compete in the second round, with the victor becoming the Local Area Champion and advancing to the Sectional Championships. Scheduling: Captains may agree not to hold playoffs, and matches must be completed by the scheduled deadline. All playoff matches must be completed by the scheduled deadline. If a match is unfinished, USTA NorCal League staff will conduct a draw, weighted to reflect the playoff positions, to determine the winner. EXCEPTION: In leagues with a wild card, if a playoff match isn't necessary for advancement, captains can agree not to play it (2.00D(3)). USTA NorCal encourages all teams to anticipate playing in a playoff round. If a team is unable to participate, USTA NorCal will make efforts to offer the playoff opportunity to another team. SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Sectionals are the next step after the Local League Playoffs. Leagues Advancing Directly : Adult 55, Adult 65, Mixed 18, Mixed 40, and Mixed 55. Smaller levels of Adult 18, Adult 40 and Combo may advance directly to Sectionals as well. Format : Sectionals follow a round-robin and match structure similar to Sectional Championships. Winners : Adult 18, Adult 40, Adult 55, Mixed 18 and Mixed 40 in the fall. Adult 65 section champions advance to a January National Invitational. Winners : From Sectional Championships in Adult 18 & Over, Adult 40 & Over, Adult 55 & Over, Mixed 18 & Over, and Mixed 40 & Over. Adult 18, Adult 40, Adult 55, Mixed 18 and Mixed 40 advance to National Championships in the fall. Adult 65 and Mixed 55 Section Champions advance to a National Invitational. Most Sectionals take place on weekends; Sectionals schedule will group Local Area winners into flights which play round robin format, with 3 to 4 team matches over two days (generally, Fri and Sat). Then flight winners, and sometimes wildcards, advance to semifinals and finals (generally, on Sun). Check the USTA League National Championship Schedule for more details. Discover USTA NorCal’s junior tennis programs designed to inspire young players of all skill levels. Explore tournaments, training opportunities, and community events that help kids develop skills, sportsmanship, and a lifelong love for the game. Intro to Tennis: Net Generation Whether your child is picking up a racquet for the first time or showcasing early promise, USTA Northern California offers a robust pathway to lay the foundation for a lifelong love of tennis. Net Generation is the first step in USTA youth tennis and is designed for kids ages 5 to 18! Net Generation Learn more about Net Generation and its benefits by clicking the button below. LEARN MORE PERSONALIZATION Smaller courts, various-sized racquets, and slower-moving balls allow kids to learn at their own speed, making tennis enjoyable and personalized. SPOTLIGHT ON PLAY We focus on creating a fun, positive, and engaging atmosphere, prioritizing the joy of playing over wins and losses. BUILD LIFELONG SKILLS Tennis isn't just a game; it's a platform for building skills both on and off the court—for a lifetime. Junior Tennis Levels: Red, Orange, Green & Yellow Ball USTA NorCal offers Red, Orange, Green and Yellow ball levels of tennis (often referred to as ROGY) to help youth develop their game properly. Each color ball introduces players to the next level of tennis, progressing from Red to Yellow ball, which is the standard tennis ball and court size. The ROGY system uses low-compression balls, smaller racquets and smaller courts that allow beginner players to be successful right away on the court based on their age, physical size and ability and to develop better technical and point-playing skills. Each stage is designed with your child’s age and skill level in mind, ensuring that every swing is perfectly suited to their unique abilities. RED BALL The tennis journey starts with Red ball for players of all ages and abilities. CLICK HERE for more about the player competencies. ORANGE BALL Players aged 7-9 years old are recommended to play in Orange ball programs. CLICK HERE for more about the player competencies. GREEN TO YELLOW BALL Players aged 9-11 years old are recommended to play in Green ball programs. CLICK HERE for more about the player competencies. The Net Generation Pathway Built on the American Development Model (ADM) , the Net Generation pathway allows parents and their young players to easily navigate the three key stages of growth within USTA and USTA NorCal tennis, starting with introductory Team Challenges , progressing to WTN Match Play, intermediate or advanced Junior Team Tennis , Junior Circuits (pre-tournaments) and Junior Tournaments . The Net Generation Junior Pathway doesn't follow a strict linear path. Players have the flexibility to participate in Junior Team Tennis or Junior Circuit events concurrently with their participation in Junior Tournaments. It's a dynamic approach that allows young athletes to explore various avenues within the pathway simultaneously. As part of the Net Generation Pathway, players ages 10 and under can participate in the following programs: TEAM CHALLENGES Team Challenges mark the first step in the tennis journey for children of all ages. This program is designed to introduce youth to tennis competition within a low-pressure, team environment with minimal time commitment. These events prioritize positive teamwork over winning and losing, creating an environment where players can flourish. The emphasis is on creating a fun and memorable experience for players. Single-day events, approximately 60-90 minutes. The focus is learning to play and being a good sport, not results. Offered in Red, Orange, and Green ball. Learn more about Team Challenges and find one in your area using the button below.
