New Courts Coming Our Way at Lowell High School

ree

Thanks to a generous grant from San Franciscans for Sports and Recreation (SFFSR), the 10 public high school tennis courts at Lowell High School were resurfaced this summer and will soon be open to the general public for the very first time! These courts were previously in very poor condition and were last resurfaced 13 years ago.

With 10 tennis courts, Lowell High School represents the third largest concentration of tennis courts anywhere in San Francisco. (Golden Gate Park has 16 courts and San Francisco State University has 14 courts.) Together with the Lowell Tennis Team coaches, the Physical Education Department Chair, and a parent of two of the members of the Lowell Boys Tennis Team, SFFSR helped form a new non-profit Community Tennis Association (CTA) "Friends of Lowell Tennis (FOLT)". Starting on August 24th, these 10 tennis courts will be open for use by the general public for the very first time on weekends and school holidays and administered by FOLT

The tennis courts have never been open to the public previously due to the San Francisco Unified School District's (SFUSD's) concerns around liability and security.  The USTA's Master Liability Insurance Program offered to CTAs, created the opportunity for SFFSR to assuage SFUSD's concerns around liability for use of the Lowell High School Tennis courts by the general public. In order to address security concerns, a new dedicated entrance to the tennis courts was built that features the USTA's Smart Access technology. Smart Access allows for online tennis court reservations to be made that contain a unique 4 digit pin code that will be used by tennis players to open the new main gate to the tennis courts on weekends and school holidays.

Moving forward 10 tennis courts in a single location will provide for numerous opportunities for:

  • Free play for San Francisco residents under 18 and SFUSD staff

  • Private Lessons

  • Clinics

  • USTA League Play

  • Adult USTA Tournaments

  • Junior USTA Tournaments

  • General Recreation

  • The San Francisco High School City Championships

Please come out on August 23rd and join USTA NorCal, SFUSD, SFFSR, and FOLT in celebrating the completion of this exciting project and the growth opportunity it provides for tennis in Northern California over the coming years.
