As we celebrate Women’s History Month, take a moment to learn more about two incredible USTA NorCal volunteers whose contributions have had a lasting impact on our community: Stephanie Kuroda and Michele Reyes, our 2024 League Volunteer of the Year Award recipients.

This award recognizes individuals whose contributions of time and volunteerism have significantly enhanced our NorCal league programs. Both Stephanie and Michele have become fixtures at Adult League Sectionals in Sacramento, showing up with unwavering enthusiasm, lending helping hands and staying until the last match is played. Their dedication and energy have left an indelible mark on the events—and the players they support.

How It All Began: Inspiration for Becoming a Volunteer

For Stephanie, volunteering started as a shared experience with friends. “I was inspired to volunteer when my home club hosted a Challenger event,” she says. “Once I had the experience, especially being able to volunteer with a friend, I felt that it was a fun way to help and see some great NorCal sectional talent.”

Michele’s journey began in a more unique way. “What inspired me was the opportunity to cater the officials at the Pro Challenger event,” she recalls. “We were asked to cook a meal that would keep them energized. Cooking is one of my passions, so I jumped at the opportunity.”

From Challenger Events to Sectionals

Michele began volunteering in the early 2000s at her home club in Natomas and has since become a dependable presence at NorCal events, especially NTRP tournaments and Sectionals. Stephanie’s involvement started around 2010 and has extended to supporting Grand Prix tournaments, NTRP events, and even a wheelchair tennis event at Gold River Sports Club.

Lessons Learned Through Volunteering

Volunteering has given both women a deep appreciation for the game—and for the logistics that go into organizing large events.

One of the biggest challenges, Stephanie notes, is keeping things running smoothly. “It really helps when players stay near the desk and keep their phones handy after checking in,” she advises. “It keeps everything on schedule.”

Michele adds, “It’s funny when players aren’t prepared—it gets chaotic!”

Advice for Future Volunteers and Sectionals Players

Stephanie encourages anyone curious about volunteering to just “Give it a shot. Volunteering has given me an appreciation for the game. It's great getting to know players out of our local section and the USTA NorCal staff and officials.”

Michele echoes the sentiment: “Some of the players have inquired on how to become a volunteer. I tell them that it's so much fun. And being able to meet new people. And seeing the same teams making it to sectionals, is inspiring."

For players preparing for Sectionals, both have practical advice: "Bring electrolytes (or whatever you use to keep your sugar levels up during play), ice when it's hot and your patience to the club," says Stephanie. "Also, bring a positive attitude. It is a privilege to play at Sectionals. Enjoy the experience!"

Michele adds, “Don’t count on USTA to keep you hydrated or food that will keep you going for the day. Bring coolers full of food that will energize you throughout the weekend."

A Glimpse Into Their Lives

When they’re not at the courts, Stephanie and Michele stay busy with their furry companions. Stephanie is dog-mom to one-year-old Ziva, while Michele has two dogs, Emma and Sancho (though Sancho is currently on loan from her sister).

They also share a love for travel—especially Hawaii. “I love visiting the coast, but Maui is my favorite,” says Stephanie. Michele agrees: “I’ve been to Hawaii four times—I absolutely love it!”

Both women are active players themselves. Stephanie has been playing since 2010, while Michele started league play in 2011. “Right now, I play on three teams and I’m still having fun,” shares.

Favorite Foods & Tennis Heroes

Stephanie loves all things Japanese cuisine, while Michele’s heart leans toward Italian and ethnic foods in general.

As for tennis heroes? Stephanie admires legends Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Steffi Graf. Michele’s favorite player is Serena Williams, with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal close behind.
