Much beyond witnessing Californian Taylor Fritz win the match that earned his “Team World” the Laver Cup prize in the Golden State, staff, members and volunteers of the USTA Northern California (Norcal) had the opportunity to experience tennis activities outside the Chace Center where this event was held last month.
The USTA Norcal staff had the opportunity to set up a kiosk to shine a light about the benefits of being part of this chapter.
“It was an amazing opportunity for us (USTA NorCal) to be given the platform at Laver Cup to showcase what we have to offer and meet thousands of our local players, along with players and fans from across the globe,” said Troy Rondeau, Community Programs Senior Manager of USTANorcal.
More than 40 participants of this chapter volunteered in different areas and the majority supported the Fast Serve Court, an outdoor space open to the public who had the opportunity to use the Wilson Roger Federer racket from the Laver Cup to practice and monitor the speed of their serve.
The reason this racked was brought to the event is because Roger Federer is the co-founder of this tournament in honor of former Australian tennis player Rod Laver and his legacy, which includes being the only male player to win the calendar-year Grand Slam twice in singles.
Former American tennis player John Isner, known as the “Ace Man” visited this court during the second day of the Laver Cup where the audience witnessed his serve in which the fastest score was 118 mph.
The Laver Cup reported that American Reilly Opelka, who participated in the doubles games, had the fastest serve with a speed of 136 mph.
Prior to the Laver Cup, the USTA Norcal also organized an event in which 24 red ball tennis courts were set up for players of all ages and abilities at SSF Mission Bay and SPARK Social SF.
About the Laver Cup 2025
It was created in 2017 and is considered an official tournament of the ATP tour despite it does not offer points to its participants and is almost held after the US Open Grand Slam.
The Laver Cup pits six of the best men’s tennis players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the World in a three- day competition.
It was made up this year by “Team World” that featured Taylor Fritz (World No. 4), Alex de Minaur (No. 8), Francisco Cerundolo (No. 19), Alex Michelsen (No. 32), Joao Fonseca (No. 44) and Reilly Opelka (No. 67) under the leadership of Captain Andre Agassi and Vice-Captain Pat Rafter.
Team Europe, captained by Yannick Noah alongside Vice Captain Tim Henman, brought a lineup with Carlos Alcaraz (World No. 1), Alexander Zverev (No. 3), Holger Rune (No. 11) and Casper Ruud (No. 12), plus Mensik (No. 16) and Cobolli (No. 26).
San Francisco was the city selected for its eight edition and nearly always with the participation of the swiss player Roger Federer.
His Majesty, as may fans call him due to his magic on court, appeared this year in San Francisco and former American tennis player Andy Roddick interviewed him during his live podcast that was installed outside the Chase Center.
He spoke about the importance of his participation in last Laver Cup tournaments as a player and organizer.
He also said that he will soon talk to his great friend, the former Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal about the possibility of doing a tour called “Team Fedal” and the Bay Area could be a good place to start this exhibition tournament.
